The Whiteheads is the most common problem of skin and everybody encounters them atleast once in life. Although whiteheads are very common but the knowledge about whitehead in between people is very less. To win a fight against whiteheads one should know what the whiteheads are actually?, How whiteheads form? And precaution to avoid whiteheads and therefore its treatment etc.

What exectly the whiteheads are?

Whitehead, also known as closed comedonse, is whitish bump on the skin which appears due to the blockage of skin pores because of the accumulation of oil or sebum, sloughed-off cells. Unlike blackheads, the whiteheads have closed opening so it blocking material that do not get oxidized with air thus appears white in colour. The whiteheads are more prone to those areas where the number of oil glands are high for example on face, Nose neck, chest, back, and shoulders.

Precaution to avoid whitehead acne:

As all we know that precaution of something is better than treatment. So it’s important to stop whitehead acne before they can appear on your skin. The main cause of the occurrence of the whiteheads is lack of proper skin care. One the skin will be clean and germsfree there are only 1% chance that you will get whiteheads. So the topmost cure is.. keep your skin always clean for preventing the whiteheads.


Although diet don’t have any direct effect on the whiteheads but healthy diet containing rich nutrients such as green vegetables and fruits, maintain adequate functioning of body including skin elements. Avoid uptake of greasy foods, like fried chicken, pizzas, burger etc.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. These would provide you with the essential minerals and vitamins. You can even opt to snack on nuts. Do keep these within limits though!


Drink lots of water, approximately every day 6 to 8 glasses of water can help rid whiteheads by diluting the amount of excess sebum in your skin. The amount of water intake should be high during summers and when sweating is high such as during sorts and other activities, because dehydrated skin lack proper moisture and the dead skin shed off at faster rate.  Avoid drinks like soda when fighting against whiteheads.


A most common method for cleaning is steam and exfoliation through scrubs. One important thing that you have to remember is that remove your makeup completely before sleeping either with the cleanser or unboiled milk followed by washing with water and moisturizer. But always take care –

Don’t use too many harsh products without doctor advice.

Don’t wash your face with soap or face wash more than 3 times a day.

Don’t go for cream massage as it can clog hair follicle and flare up new acne. But always use good moisturizer after exfoliation to avoid dry skin.

Don’t leave your hair oiled for more than 2 hours.


Whitehead is influenced by hormonal imbalance associated with stress.  Hormonal imbalance increases the sebum secretion and ultimately leads to the whiteheads. Proper sleeping, daily excises and proper routine of food would help you to reduce the stress level.

How to Get Rid of Whiteheads on Face

There are many ways of getting rid of whiteheads by different methods. These methods vary person to person according to their skin type and severity of the whitehead occurrence. Some of the methods to get rid of whitehead are given below. These methods involve natural, herbal, chemical as well mechanical ways.


The basic and most common treatment for whitehead removal is exfoliation of dead layer of skin. Use this treatment 3-4 times in a week in whitehead prone area, one thing you should remember that over exfoliation cause removal of healthy skin layers which tend to sunburn more easily. You can also use home scrubs for exfoliation. Some good one are –

  • Make a paste of roasted and powdered pomegranate peel with fresh lime juice. Apply it over the affected area. This is useful for blackheads as well.
  • Apply a paste of sandalwood with rose water over effective area for 20 minutes and wash it off with lukewarm water. This paste also makes the skin soften and smooth.
  • Mix of groundnut oil with fresh limejuice in equal quantity will help you to prevent the whiteheads.
  • Apply paste of 1tbsp. honey with egg white evenly on the face for 20 minutes. Wash it off with lukewarm water. You can use only honey to prevent whiteheads and for glowing skin.
  • Make a paste of vinegar with cornstarch. Apply it on the whiteheads and leave for 15-20 minutes and then wash off with water.


The most effective way for the removal of whitehead is steam. Steam causes expansion of hair follicles on skin. Take steam for about 10-15 minutes or until sweating occur. After taking steam gently but firmly squeeze the whiteheads to remove the plug of hair follicles. Steam also helps in deep cleaning of your skin which prevent outbreak of whiteheads.

Benzoyl Peroxide:

One of the most trusted acne treatments is Benzoyl Peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide has antibacterial properties. The popularity of benzoyl peroxide for whitehead treatment based on the fact that it not only helps curing the whiteheads, but also helps in preventing the appearance of whiteheads in the future.  Benzoyl peroxide works as a peeling agent, increasing skin shedding and clearing pores, thus reducing the whiteheads outbreak. The use of moisturizer is recommended with benzoyl peroxide as it causes dryness.

Some of the remedies that will also help you against whiteheads–

  • Drink a glass of warm water with fresh lime juice as soon as you wake up in the morning. This will detoxify the body, not only prevent skin problem also helps in proper digestion
  • Apply a paste of fenugreek leaves and water for overnight. In the morning, wipe it with the help of a soft wet napkin. Fenugreek will work against both whiteheads as well as blackheads.
